Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri (14 Sep 1923 – 18 June 2005) was a renowned Indian physicist, well recognized for his pioneering works in general relativity and cosmology. His most significant contribution is the celebrated Raychaudhuri equation, showcasing the natural and inevitable appearance of singularities in general relativity. The Raychaudhuri equation provides a key ingredient to the proofs of the famous Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems for which the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Roger Penrose in 2020. The year 2023 marked the birth centenary year of Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri.
