Abstract: Architecture that is imbued with a quality of ‘liveness’ cannot be simply a functional device, but would need to have the ability to respond to change, to the unexpected and to the unforeseen. Professional competence, technical expertise and certainty of knowledge cannot be sufficient for making architecture that is alive or has qualities of liveness. The paper frames the making of an alive architecture as a social process involving open-ended, dynamic and unpredictable processes and also proposes pedagogical processes that can enable and enrich such an approach to architecture.
