Abstract: The increasing power of synthetic organic chemistry throughout the 20th century has been exploited to enable and hasten biological studies. Relying upon the methods and tools of synthetic organic chemistry, chemical biology and other interdisciplinary areas aim to probe biological systems with small organic molecules. The generated understanding of biology then paves the way for drug discovery and development, thereby positively affecting human health and well-being. In this direction, we have been able to understand the molecular mechanism of lipid rafts formation on the cell surface (which regulates the signal transduction) with the help of synthetic probe molecules. Secondly, with the help of simplest chemical transformations, we have identified non-enzymatic pathways for the synthesis of various biologically important molecules. These pathways are the natural outcome of chemical reactions between simple molecules which in turn has helped in understanding the complexity of chemical emergence of life on early earth. Further, utilizing this knowledge of organic chemistry, I am interested in investigating the chemistry and biology of bioactive molecules for the discovery of newer therapeutics for the betterment of human health.
