Abstract: This presentation delivers a comprehensive overview of observational seismology, focusing on investigating subsurface structures and tectonic dynamics within the Himalaya region. Utilizing datasets from local broadband seismic networks, it aims to elucidate the complex evolution of the region’s geological features. Specifically, the study delves into the kinematics of various thrust sheets, employing integrated approaches to map seismic velocity and anisotropy across regions such as Garhwal-Kumaun and Northeast Himalaya. The primary objective is to develop a seismotectonic model that accurately characterizes collision tectonics and seismic activity distribution within the Himalayan belt. Through meticulous analysis and methodological refinement, significant findings include the imaging of critical tectonic structures like the Main Himalayan Thrust and its lateral variation in adjacent regions, and their implication on earthquake occurrences. The results of crustal seismic anisotropy in the Garhwal Himalaya using local shear waves are presented as a proxy for crustal-scale stresses. Additionally, the presentation discusses the upper mantle deformation structure in northeast India through tracking mantle anisotropy. Methodological advancements, such as the development of a Monte-Carlo travel time inversion technique for deriving 1-D velocity models, are also presented. This presentation offers a rigorous seismological exploration of the Himalaya region's geological complexities, providing valuable insights into seismic processes and contributing to our broader understanding of tectonic dynamics.
