Emergent properties in quantum materials: Inverse Faraday effect and orbital magnetization

Abstract: In this talk, I will briefly describe my major research activities in strongly correlated quantum materials. After introducing the broad idea of emergence in a many-body physics framework and outlining the key questions I am working on, I will focus on two characteristic examples based on my previous works [Refs. 1,2]. In the first part, I will try to introduce the concept of Inverse Faraday effect (IFE) and then lay out the microscopic origin of IFE in two classes of Mott insulators --- centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric. Most importantly, the emergence of antiferromagnetic IFE in non-centrosymmetric Mott insulators will be emphasized. To the best of our knowledge, the latter framework is developed for the first time in our work [Ref. 1]. In the latter part, I will summarize the emergence of orbital magnetization in a particular class of multiorbital Mott insulators that lack any magnetic ordering and form a prototypical example of quantum spin liquids [Ref. 2]. The talk will end with a discussion of some of my future plans, briefly mentioning multipolar multiferroics in spin-orbit coupled multiorbital Mott insulators and other related physics in the framework of coupled spin-orbital-charge-lattice degrees of freedom relevant to quantum materials.
