Abstract: Irrespective of the country and continent, water scarcity for human consumption and agriculture is gradually becoming one of the significant global concern. Water scarcity is caused due to the overexploitation of existing water resources and pollution of existing water resources due to untreated wastewater and polluted stormwater disposal. With the current growth in demand from the rising population, the overexploitation of water is inevitable. However, the pollution of aquatic water resources due to the discharge of untreated wastewater and polluted stormwater can certainly be checked by treating wastewater and stormwaters which pollute our freshwater resources. The treated wastewater can be directly utilized in many low water qualities requiring chores (e.g., agriculture, horticulture, etc.) or for disposal to nearby lakes. However, the requirement of high cost and energy and the need for skilled supervision are the major bottlenecks in adopting the conventional treatment methodologies. In brief, there has been a need to develop sustainable, decentralized, and affordable treatment technologies for the treatment of stormwater and wastewater from different sources. Under such a concept, the candidate has spent the last ten years looking toward developing sustainable and cost-effective treatment systems based on macrophyte-assisted vermifiltration for wastewater treatment, along with tire derived aggregates based underground runoff chambers for stormwater treatment for safe disposal or reuse to prevent our local water resources.
