Hamiltonian techniques for asymptotic symmetries

Abstract: The goal of this talk is to discuss Hamiltonian methods for gauge
theories in the context of asymptotic symmetries, with gravity being
the key focus. With a brief overview of the role of asymptotic
symmetries in scattering processes and infrared physics, I will
outline the different forms of Hamiltonian dynamics proposed by Dirac.
I will then demonstrate how asymptotic symmetries in gravity, namely
the BMS symmetry, may be canonically described within the (3+1) ADM
Hamiltonian formulation or Dirac's "instant form" approach, as well as
the light-cone formalism based on the "front form" approach. Finally,
I will comment on the implications of our results for the
initial-value problem of GR, gravitational radiation, and flat space
holography.
