Microbes at Work: The Tiny Troubleshooters
Dr. Sumer Singh Meena
Location : Online
Abstract: The presentation aims to offer a thorough insight into my academic journey to date as well as my future plans. My research group focuses on understanding the microbial power of biotransformation, which can be utilized for both the biodegradation of pollutants and the synthesis of valuable chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and more. In the initial part of my presentation, I will delve into microbial biodegradation, specifically addressing the breakdown of persistent pollutants like plastic, PAHs, and synthetic dyes. Our group has successfully isolated novel strains capable of degrading these pollutants from contaminated sites. Employing advanced analytical tools and genomics/transcriptomics, we aim to elucidate the intricate mechanisms underlying microbial biodegradation. Additionally, our research extends to resource recovery from agro-industrial waste, with a focus on producing biofertilizers, biosurfactants, and bioactive compounds tailored for industrial applications. I will also cover my teaching plans, administrative responsibilities, and outreach activities.
