Phytoremediation- An eco-friendly and sustainable remediation tool for terrestrial contamination
Dr. Sandip Singh
Location : Online
Abstract: Contamination of terrestrial environments by various pollutants from anthropogenic activities poses significant ecological and human health risks globally. Among these pollutants are metal(loid)s, PAHs, and pharmaceutical residues, which can accumulate in food and fodder crops, magnifying the risk. To address this issue sustainably, eco-friendly remediation technologies are urgently needed. Phytoremediation, utilizing plants to extract pollutants from soil and water, offers a promising solution. While early research focused on edible crops in controlled environments, current efforts emphasize non-edible, fast-growing plant species thriving in contaminated areas for practical and efficient remediation. Additionally, researchers are exploring amendments such as biochar and earthworms to enhance phytoremediation efficacy.
