Abstract: In this talk we will explore the critical hydrometeorological processes in India and the Himalayan region, leveraging stable isotopes in precipitation alongside meteorological parameters to unravel the complexities of water distribution and availability. With climate change altering rainfall patterns, intensity, and distribution, it becomes imperative to understand the underlying mechanisms governing these changes. Our study, under the aegis of IWIN National programme, analyzed isotopic data from 41 stations across India, revealing significant insights into evaporation, continental moisture contribution, and the impact of orographic barriers on precipitation isotopic composition. These findings highlight the dominance of certain hydrometeorological processes across different spatial scales, offering a nuanced understanding of precipitation dynamics in India. Looking forward, the presentation will outline a comprehensive research plan to delve deeper into the Himalayan hydrometeorological system. It aims to characterize glacial roles in the hydrological cycle, decipher atmospheric circulation impacts, and assess anthropogenic influences on hydrology. Employing advanced analytical techniques and high-resolution data, this future work promises to provide a detailed understanding of the interactions within the Himalayan ecosystem, contributing to sustainable water management and climate resilience strategies. Through this dual-focused exploration, we seek to bridge current knowledge gaps and envision future avenues for hydrometeorological research in the region going beyond the conventional understanding.
