Abstract: Ocean has the capacity to provide sustainable amounts of renewable energy and this energy can be harnessed to cater the energy requirements of nations. Right now, there are very few offshore energy power plants and the power output is fairly small which is mostly limited to shallow water operation. Offshore energy largely refers to the energy carried by ocean currents, tides, wind and waves etc. Among those, the offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are being seen as potential energy generator; as primarily large wind turbines can be installed in offshore locations. Research is still underway for addressing the several challenges associated with this technology and the control problem is specific one and are required to (a) optimized energy harvesting under Wave-Current-Ice loads and (b) ensure reliability of operation subject to sensor malfunction. A reasonable knowledge about the response of such a FE Model of OWT under environmental loads is necessary but challenging. This is due to the coupling of internal forces along with external load excitations. In this work, a model of nonlinear -OWT is studied with the intention of keeping the response close to the desired one. This is achieved using a novel sub-optimal control mechanism derived from nonlinear quadratic regulator (NQR) theory. The results are demonstrated using the Analytical, Numerical and Experimental models of OWT under various load case scenarios.
