Decoding Igneous Petrogenesis and Tectonic Processes Using Tools of Geochemistry: Current Research and Future Directions

Abstract: Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) are considered the most extensive magmatic events on Earth, during which
massive amounts of melt erupted in a short period (1 Ma) of time. Traditionally, the origin of LIPs is linked with mantle
plumes. However, our analysis reveals that extensive melting of ambient mantle regimes can also lead to the formation
of LIPs, and this further signifies the role of plate tectonics in LIP events. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to unravel
the relationship between LIP events in the continents and their implications on the breakup mechanisms of
supercontinents. Additionally, I will highlight the thermal differences observed in the source mantle of oceanic and
continental LIPs and their potential implications on supercontinent cycles. Moreover, I'll also discuss our ongoing efforts
to unravel the heterogeneities and volatile budget of the deep mantle sources of the Deccan LIP in India using advanced
geochemical and isotopic tools. Along with teaching plans, the presentation will also provide a concise overview of our
research in various geological domains, including Archean granite-greenstone belts, layered gabbro-anorthosite
complexes, Cenozoic subduction zones, Venusian anorthosites, Precambrian dyke swarms, and oceanic plume events
recorded in Tethyan ophiolite fragments.
