Crust-Mantle Evolution: Inferences from Radiogenic Isotopes

Abstract: Ever since its accretion by tumultuous collision of planetary embryos ca. 4.56 billion years ago, the Earth underwent a series of transformative processes that persist to this day. Among the most influential changes was the planet's differentiation into three distinct layers: (1) an inner-most metallic core, (2) a mantle comprising Si-poor silicate rocks, and (3) an outermost thin crust composed of Si-rich silicate rocks, predominantly rich in feldspar (felsic rocks), alongside variations rich in Mg and Fe (mafic rocks). The ongoing evolution involves the differentiation of the mantle, the formation of crust, and the continual recycling of crust back into the mantle. The forthcoming presentation, titled "Crust-Mantle Evolution: Inferences from Radiogenic Isotopes" aims to illuminate the origins of significant continental crust formation and the subsequent evolution of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle. This illumination will be drawn from comprehensive geochemical, geochronological, and isotopic investigations of the Paleoarchean to Neoproterozoic felsic and mafic igneous rocks from the Indian and Arabian shields.
